The Slip

The Slip! Very cool stuff. Vocals in the first song remind me of Modest Mouse a little, which is great. Anyway, they're apparently being helped out by Drew Malamud, who worked with the Stars, Metric, and The Dears. I think that's a very, very good sign! My only complaint is that they sound sort of rock-ish and I typically don't listen to that often. But if you like that sound, I think you'd like the Slip. But for me, I like the beginning of "Even Rats" and it's when the rockish guitars come in that I become a little wary.

Touring with The Lovely Feathers for a while, then My Morning Jacket. (Check the MySpace for dates, but let me just mention that they're coming to D.C.!)

Their new album (see above!) comes out November 7th.

The Radio Dept.

A couple of their songs remind me a little of John Vanderslice's slower songs, which is good. Anyway, the vocals are cool and the sound is cool, etc. etc. It's sort of hard to describe, but just listen. (If you're in the mood for relatively calm, relaxed music...which you should be.)

PS: Some of their songs were in the Marie Antoinette movie. Neat! Go listen to them.

Under Electric Light

These guys emailed me and I'm certainly glad they did. They're from Montreal and make electronic/ambient stuff; it's pretty cool. One of their songs ("Let Go," see below) reminds me a little of what one would hear at a planetarium before the show starts. (FYI, that's a compliment.) Anyway, check them out! It's cool and a little space-agey.

The Curtains

Lead singer is an ex-Deerhoof. Very "experimental", but I feel the first song is pulled together quite nicely! Not that the second isn't but.... Anyway, it's fun to listen to! (And they wear cool clothes at concerts, so it appears.)

The Curtains - Fletcher

Art Brut

This band is sort of loud, so I supposed it's an acquired taste. It's definitely some rough art. (Hah!) They're playing with Spinto Band this month (or vice versa, I suppose), so that's definitely a cause for celebration!

The Low Hello

Whoa, something sounds a LOT like a poppish Neutral Milk Hotel. There are some very obvious vocal similarities (e.g. first song below). Their sound is interesting. I'm not a huge fan, but it's worth checking out regardless.

Albin de la Simone

Currently going through a super French singer-songwriter man phrase. Part 1: Albin de la Simone. I honestly loathe most slow songs in English solely because the lyrics are too schmaltzy. French gets rid of that problem. But, Albin de la Simone is bit more poppish and there's more movement than, say, Rufus Wainwright or something. And they're catchy. (Impressive since I know zero French.)

Sorry, but it was really hard to find any free mp3s of his online. I'm assuming he's not "into that thing." Nonetheless, definitely get some of his stuff. He did a great song with Feist (Elle aime). Hype Machine link below to help.
